Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the spot where your jaw connects to your skull to allow you to close and open your jaw easily. Sometimes the TMJ is injured or damaged, resulting in a painful condition called temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorder (TMD). If you are experiencing pain or hearing noises when you move your jaw, schedule a consultation with one of our trained dental specialists at SmilesNY Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry to determine if you have TMD. At our practice in New York, NY, our dentists use advanced equipment to examine and treat your TMD to ease your pain. Your TMJ therapy will be based on the cause of your TMD and your specific condition, but some options include oral appliances (mouth or night guards), bite modification, dental restorations, and more.
DTR Patient Testimonal
SmilesNY is one of the only dental practices in New York to provide Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) therapy to help identify occlusal contacts that could be causing TMD symptoms, and treat them by balancing the way the teeth work and fit together. DTR utilizes T-Scan and EMG technology to measure the pressure, timing, and muscle activity of a patient's bite. While evaluating the connection between the teeth, parts of the enamel may be shaved off, or tooth-colored fillings can be added to the teeth to create a more symmetrical and balanced bite. Patients can typically experience results after one treatment with optimal results occurring after 2 – 4 treatments of DTR therapy. During your consultation, talk with your SmilesNY dentist about the benefits and lasting effects of DTR therapy to treat the symptoms of TMD.

"I've been receiving my dental care at Smiles for 10+ years. Treatment has included several crowns, periodontal surgery, Invisalign, creation of a night guard to protect my teeth from constant grinding and finally — in fact, just today — Veneers. Dr Roth is phenomenal. He lets you know what’s going to happen before it happens and he’s a gentle perfectionist. I’ve also had numerous outstanding and truly pain free cleanings with Janice. She is super nice and she really has honed her craft. The entire staff is exceptional and very good at what they do. This is the place you want to go to for expert care and super friendly providers. Impossible as it may seem, you may actually love going to the dentist! My teeth look amazing and I can thank this dental practice for that fact."- M.G. / Google / Mar 19, 2019

"Addition to my previous review 2 years ago: My Personal Investment of Veneers. Dr. Steven Roth and the entire team at Smiles NY are the ultimate experience for dental care! I have been a patient of Dr. Roth’s for 25+ years and trust him with any professional advice. That said, he gently and clearly explained to me why I should consider veneers for my teeth. I have dealt with TMJ for years and of course as we age our bite and teeth shift . After completing one implant for a cracked tooth and discovered I had other teeth with hairline fractures , I decided to make the personal investment of saving them from more damage and add a total of 15 veneers to my top and bottom teeth. It is the BEST decision I made as I had 100% trust that I was in expert hands and my new veneers are absolutely gorgeous !! He and Darlene, his Dental Assistant explained to me every step of the process with the highest level of expertise, professionalism , kindness and empathy. They are never rushed and they use the latest technology. I love that they both have a fabulous sense of humor which is so important having that level of dental work! I have no doubt that the day I move from NYC, I will always come back to Dr. Roth and Smiles NY for all my dental care. I have to add that the entire team at Smiles NY are the most incredible support system . I am very grateful to say, that I feel completely at ease and relaxed every time I walk into their office and that alone in a medical practice in NYC is a luxury! Thank you so much to you all for your A++ care and kindness ALWAYS! ❤️ REVIEW WRITTEN IN 2021 Dr. Steven Roth has been my dentist for over 20 years. I can not give enough wonderful, amazing compliments to him as well as his outstanding team in the office. I always call him the "Picasso" of teeth as he is a perfectionist with making sure you have 100% excellent care, including follow-up phone calls, consultations and office visits. His office team and Dr. Timothy Chase consistently share his same work ethic. Each visit is so professional with everyone making you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, soothing music, immaculately clean office and most important for me is that everyone has a smile and a fabulous sense of humor! Even completing my visit with Lorita at the end of my appointment is always so organized. She is always so professional, friendly and consistently sweet and understanding when discussing the finances. I need to add that I can not imagine any other hygienist cleaning my teeth other than Janice who is the best!! No one likes having to visit the dentist, however, our teeth are so important to our overall health and for me, come rain or literally, in a crazy snow storm .... Smiles NY is the BEST in NYC!!!! PS. The F and Q train has an exit 1/2 a block from their office! :)"- S.B. / Google / Aug 28, 2023
Temporomandibular joint disorder might be brought on by a single injury to the jaw, chronic grinding of your teeth and clenching your jaw (bruxism), or a misaligned bite (dental malocclusion). Medical conditions that might lead to TMD include a tumor in the TMJ or arthritis. In some cases, the reason for TMD is uncertain, but if you are experiencing signs and symptoms, your SmilesNY dentist can still diagnose and treat your jaw. The most common symptoms of TMD are pain or tenderness in the jaw, spasms in your facial muscles, feeling as if your jaw is stiff or stuck, and headaches that start near your ears. Another symptom is hearing clicking, cracking, or popping whenever you open your jaw.
What To Expect
To help diagnose a temporomandibular disorder, your dentist will carefully listen and understand your concerns before performing a physical examination. During the exam, they will assess the movement of your jaw and start looking for indications of misalignment, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching. They will also feel the jawbone and surrounding area for any tenderness and inflammation. Digital x-rays of your lower face or a bite analysis may be conducted to look for any underlying causes that could determine your treatment method. Based on the exam, your dentist will go over your treatment options that could include a dental appliance, orthodontics, or restorations (crowns or bridges).
Along with procedures to fix the underlying cause of your temporomandibular joint disorder, your dentist can recommend other means to ease pain and other symptoms at home. This includes a liquid or soft food diet, avoiding chewing gum and biting your nails, heat packs on your jaw, and relaxation techniques. Your dentist can also give you exercises to strengthen your jaw or prescribe medicine to relax your muscles (and to ease pain, anxiety, or inflammation).
Continue to attend follow-up visits so the progress of your TMJ therapy can be assessed. If your treatment is not helping, a different approach may be considered. Once your TMD has been treated, you should keep going to annual dental exams at SmilesNY to maintain your oral health.
Dental insurance coverage for TMJ pain diagnosis and TMD remedies will vary, so we will contact your carrier to calculate your out-of-pocket costs. Whether you have dental insurance or not, a member of our financial team will go over cost estimates when reviewing treatment options. To make all treatments affordable, SmilesNY accepts many payment methods and we can help you find low-interest medical financing.
